Our Story

Toowoomba Haematology & Oncology Clinic (THOC) is a specialist medical practice providing evidence‑based care for patients with blood disorders and all forms of cancer. We are located within St Andrew’s Hospital in Toowoomba and serve people from the Darling Downs, Granite Belt and regional Queensland and New South Wales.

THOC began in 2017 when Dr Joel Collins established a solo haematology practice to deliver specialist care locally for patients who previously had to travel significant distances for treatment. As the needs of our community became clearer and more specialists joined, the clinic evolved to offer a broader range of cancer services.

Today our multidisciplinary team includes haematologists (blood cancers and other blood disorders), medical oncologists (solid organ cancers) and palliative‑care clinicians working together to support patients throughout their treatment journey.

In 2021 we added an iron‑infusion, anaemia and venesection service. This clinic was created to provide easier access to treatments that some patients such as those without private health insurance, pregnant women and younger people – often find difficult to obtain in a timely way. Our aim remains to provide high‑quality, patient‑centred care close to home, in collaboration with local general practitioners, specialists, surgeons, allied health providers and hospital teams. By integrating haematology, medical oncology, survivorship and palliative care, we support patients at every stage of their diagnosis and treatment.
