Rapid Access Cancer Assessment Pathway (RACAP)
At Toowoomba Haematology and Oncology Clinic (THOC), we understand that one of the most challenging stages of cancer care is the period between suspicion, diagnosis and treatment planning. Our Rapid Access Cancer Assessment Pathway (RACAP) has been developed to help patients and referring clinicians access specialist cancer expertise earlier in the diagnostic journey.
Single Referral Pathway
RACAP provides a single referral pathway for patients with suspected or confirmed cancer, even when the diagnosis is not yet fully established. Referrals are welcomed for patients with concerning symptoms, abnormal blood tests, suspicious imaging findings, lymphadenopathy, possible haematological malignancy, suspected metastatic disease, unexplained weight loss, night sweats, hypercalcaemia, or other findings that may indicate cancer.
Undifferentiated Patients
Importantly, referrers do not need to determine whether a patient requires a haematologist or medical oncologist before referring. THOC’s integrated team of haematologists, medical oncologists and palliative care clinicians will triage referrals internally and coordinate the most appropriate specialist assessment. We can assist with expedited investigations, biopsy coordination, imaging, inpatient work-up where required, and navigation through complex diagnostic pathways.
The Goal - Streamlined, Rapidly Accessible Cancer Care
Our goal is simple: to make access to cancer assessment, diagnosis and treatment faster, easier and more coordinated for patients across the Darling Downs and surrounding regions. Through a single referral, patients gain access to a comprehensive cancer service with seamless transition between diagnosis, treatment, survivorship and palliative care when needed.
